Buckden Camping, Skipton, North Yorkshire

At the end of the July heatwave we headed to the small village of Buckden near Skipton and the relatively small Buckden Camping site on a working farm. Joining us were 4 other families totalling 10 adults and 10 children for our largest group camping trip yet. We loaded up the car and hitched up the trailer in scorching heat, and set off for the drive of just over an hour to Buckden. On arrival we setup camp in stifling humidity just before the heavens opened and we spent the rest of the weekend dressed from head to toe in waterproofs. Read on to find out whether our spirits were dampened! (more…)

We spent Early May Bank Holiday at Dafarn Rhos campsite on Anglesey. A well maintained family-friendly site with direct access to the beach. It's conveniently located quite close to where you'll arrive from the mainland but well placed for exploring the island. Read on to find out more about the campsite and our recommendations for places to visit. (more…)

Bridge Villa, Wallingford, Oxfordshire

Website: bridgevilla.co.uk | Phone: 01491 836860 | Postcode: OX10 8HB

For a weekend of camping with friends we chose Bridge Villa for its convenient location between the two families. We took the Friday off work and travelled down during the day. After an uneventful journey, the last few miles after leaving the M40 took us through some rural picturesque Oxfordshire villages. Unusually for most campsites, at Bridge Villa you just turn off the main road and you're straight into the site among the pitches. There's no long single track driveway winding through fields to approach the site, here you stay right in the heart of the village.

Wold Farm, Flamborough, East Yorkshire

Website: woldfarmcampsite.com | Phone: 01262 850536 | Postcode: YO15 1AT

The first thing that strikes you about Wold Farm is its beautiful remote location. The site is accessed down a half mile gravel track from Bempton Lane that runs past Flamborough. We stopped at the farmhouse-cum-reception and were directed into the 2nd field (Puffin Meadow) where we could pitch wherever we liked within the non-electric part (about 2 thirds of the field) as there are no marked pitches here. We went to the furthest side and set up facing away from the campsite which meant that we looked over the grazing sheep in the neighbouring field and out to sea with a view of Flamborough Head Lighthouse. The views are hard to beat. The beach and sea are not accessible directly from the campsite as it's located near a clifftop. The fields are fenced and it's far enough from the cliff edge that it's safe for children. A path has been made through the farmland to the coastal walk that extends in both directions along the coast. (more…)

Orchard Camping, Penistone, South Yorkshire

[caption id="attachment_927" align="alignleft" width="300"]View from site View from site[/caption] This was another 2-night weekend camping trip that we booked just a few days before. The site, close to Penistone is around an hour away from home so was close enough that we could pack the van and head off after a full day's work and still arrive in time to setup camp before dark. This site is small. Really small. We drove straight past it (twice) when we first arrived. The only giveaway is an Orchard Camping banner tied to the wall next to the gate, but that was obscured by a camper's car when we arrived. (more…)

Hebden Bridge Camping, West Yorkshire

[caption id="attachment_895" align="alignright" width="300"]Hardstanding pitches next to carpark Hardstanding pitches next to carpark[/caption] Campsites are few and far between around the lovely town of Hebden Bridge. It's a short 45 minute drive from home but we'd tried and failed to go camping here once before. We'd decided to just turn up with a couple of campsites in mind and felt sure we'd manage to find somewhere. Unfortunately one site had closed for refurbishment and the other was closed for a private booking and despite lots of searching and driving we didn't manage to find anywhere.  So this time we'd booked in advance at the Hebden Bridge Camping site. Gibraltar Farm, Silverdale, Lancashire

From the top of the siteFor this camping trip we took a drive out to the west coast near Morecambe Bay to visit Gibraltar Farm. As the name suggests, the campsite is situated alongside a working farm. The entrance is hidden away behind a barn and not very well signed, but a fellow camper was able to point us in the right direction. Once you turn the corner behind the barn, the campsite opens up in front of you. (more…)

Lathkill Dale Campsite, Monyash, Peak District

[caption id="attachment_821" align="alignright" width="300"]Monyash Village Pond Monyash Village Pond[/caption] For our first trip of 2014 we chose Lathkill Dale Campsite in the Peak District. At just under two hours from home it was far enough to give the van its first run out after it had been parked up over winter but close enough for a weekend trip after work on Friday night. We also got to try out our new, slightly smaller awning. What we hadn't planned on was driving a route that skirted the edge of the Peak District over steep climbs, narrow lanes and tight bends. In heavy rain... and dense fog.  (more…)
