Our pitch

Our pitch

This was our first trip as a family with our 6 month old son. It’s also the earliest in the year that we’ve camped so for both of those reasons we didn’t want to gamble on campsite facilities this time. We played safe with a campsite that looked like it had great facilities and also came with solid reviews from all the usual websites. Comfort comes with a price though and The Hideaway was probably the most expensive we’ve ever stayed at, but we hoped it would be worth it.

Hebden Bridge Camping, West Yorkshire

Hardstanding pitches next to carpark

Hardstanding pitches next to carpark

Campsites are few and far between around the lovely town of Hebden Bridge. It’s a short 45 minute drive from home but we’d tried and failed to go camping here once before. We’d decided to just turn up with a couple of campsites in mind and felt sure we’d manage to find somewhere. Unfortunately one site had closed for refurbishment and the other was closed for a private booking and despite lots of searching and driving we didn’t manage to find anywhere.  So this time we’d booked in advance at the Hebden Bridge Camping site.

campsite

Gibraltar Farm, Silverdale, Lancashire

From the top of the siteFor this camping trip we took a drive out to the west coast near Morecambe Bay to visit Gibraltar Farm. As the name suggests, the campsite is situated alongside a working farm. The entrance is hidden away behind a barn and not very well signed, but a fellow camper was able to point us in the right direction. Once you turn the corner behind the barn, the campsite opens up in front of you.

Woodend Campsite, Austwick, Lancashire

Our pitch

Our pitch

For this camping trip we had some family visiting from Australia and wanted to show them some of our favourite places in the Yorkshire Dales. We settled on Woodend Campsite which is located on a working farm of the same name just past the village of Austwick.

Lathkill Dale Campsite, Monyash, Peak District

Monyash Village Pond

Monyash Village Pond

For our first trip of 2014 we chose Lathkill Dale Campsite in the Peak District. At just under two hours from home it was far enough to give the van its first run out after it had been parked up over winter but close enough for a weekend trip after work on Friday night. We also got to try out our new, slightly smaller awning. What we hadn’t planned on was driving a route that skirted the edge of the Peak District over steep climbs, narrow lanes and tight bends. In heavy rain… and dense fog.  (more…)

Sykeside Camping Park, Brotherswater, Lake District

The campsite surrounded by hills

The campsite surrounded by hills

For our longest camping trip of the year we ventured West into Cumbria and the Lake District to Sykeside Camp Site. The site itself is hidden away in a dip and situated behind the Brotherswater Inn pub off the A592. The drive to the site takes you over a high pass with great views but your passengers may spend a lot of the journey with their eyes tightly closed as there are some steep drops just off to the side of the road in parts. In fact, we pulled over in a small car park just before the road descends down to the campsite for a quick photo opportunity to take in the views down the valley to the body of water that is Brotherswater.

campsite

High Laning, Dent, Yorkshire Dales

We took a last-minute trip to Dent to meet up with a group of friends who were visiting from “down south” and renting a local cottage for the week so we made the trip over in the ‘van and booked a pitch for a couple of nights at High Laning. The route that we took (coming in from Skipton) took us up over and through the hills on a winding road through farmland in which we had to stop several times to open gates, drive through and the close the gates shut behind us! It’s quite a large campsite, being split across both sides of the main road out of Dent.

campsite

Gordale Scar, Malham, Skipton

I had been wanting to stay at the Gordale Scar campsite since seeing it featured on Martin Dorey‘s BBC2 series “One Man and His Campervan” a couple of years ago and this summer I finally got around to organising a trip. Let’s be very clear about the main attraction of this site: Location, location, location!  Facilities are basic – easily the most basic of any site we’ve reviewed so far: no electric hookups, no hard standing pitches, no on-site shop (in fact no shop for several miles). All of that is easily forgiven though because the location is fantastic. (more…)
