Sleningford Watermill, Ripon

This was a site chosen for a specific purpose, and recommended to us by a work friend when asked about the area. I bought Tom vouchers for his birthday earlier this year to visit treetopnets, a trampoline park in the trees. We chose to visit the Ripon branch and plan a camping trip around our booking. We did some research for sites in the area, and I asked a friend who camps regularly with his family (and incidentally just this year made the jump up from tent to folding camper ), and he recommended Slengingford, as they visit the site each year, originally trying it as a result of 2 other colleagues recommending it.

Camping Abroad (with a Trailer Tent)

This was a post I started to draft last year when we were preparing for our first trip abroad. I never got around to finishing it but as we are currently getting ready to do it all again it seems like a good idea to note down some of this information to refer to again.

Living in Europe offers up so many destinations when you have transport that you are confident with. When we had the ‘van, after the work Tom had done on it in the early years, I’m not sure we ever trusted it for long journeys within the UK, never mind on mainland Europe. Nowadays we’re using the trailer with our family car, which makes a huge difference to the types of trips we want to plan. Once you start looking, the possibilities are endless.  Ferry travel will get you direct to the Netherlands, France or Ireland, or there is the shuttle to France. There are then any number of onward destinations you can choose. Our goal is to build up to lengthy cross-country trips staying in various locations for a few nights at a time, but for a change, we’ve decided to start out small and see how it goes whilst we get used to the trailer and the boys are still very young.

Wold Farm, Flamborough, East Yorkshire

Website: woldfarmcampsite.com | Phone: 01262 850536 | Postcode: YO15 1AT

The first thing that strikes you about Wold Farm is its beautiful remote location. The site is accessed down a half mile gravel track from Bempton Lane that runs past Flamborough. We stopped at the farmhouse-cum-reception and were directed into the 2nd field (Puffin Meadow) where we could pitch wherever we liked within the non-electric part (about 2 thirds of the field) as there are no marked pitches here. We went to the furthest side and set up facing away from the campsite which meant that we looked over the grazing sheep in the neighbouring field and out to sea with a view of Flamborough Head Lighthouse. The views are hard to beat. The beach and sea are not accessible directly from the campsite as it’s located near a clifftop. The fields are fenced and it’s far enough from the cliff edge that it’s safe for children. A path has been made through the farmland to the coastal walk that extends in both directions along the coast.

Goodbye Bongo, Hello Concorde!

Well, after 7 years of campervan ownership, it is with some regret that we are announcing here that we have sold the ’van. After a lot of consideration, taking into account several factors, we concluded that ultimately, the campervan didn’t work for us any longer and we needed a better solution. Contrary to what we originally thought, that solution is not a new ’van, but instead a trailer tent. So, the campervan may have gone, but the camping will continue, as will this site!

Our pitch

Our pitch

Our trip to Holme Valley Camping was a bit of a last minute unplanned getaway – but isn’t that the beauty of owning a campervan? We loaded up the van and set off on Friday night after work. The drive was only about 50 minutes, even at campervan pace. Although we arrived fairly late on Friday evening (8pm), the site was very accommodating about late check-ins – in fact, there were 3 other campers checking in when we arrived. Due to our late booking we weren’t able to secure a pitch with electric hookup, but the non electric prices are incredibly good value (£14 for a campervan pitch, with awning and up to two people, at the time of writing this review).

This was another 2-night weekend camping trip that we booked just a few days before. The site, close to Penistone is around an hour away from home so was close enough that we could pack the van and head off after a full day’s work and still arrive in time to setup camp before dark. This site is small. Really small. We drove straight past it (twice) when we first arrived. The only giveaway is an Orchard Camping banner tied to the wall next to the gate, but that was obscured by a camper’s car when we arrived.
